End of Year Report

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

It’s the end of another school year and the long days of summer approach. It’s been a somewhat busy year on Seomra Ranga with lots happening. In fact, there have been more than half a million visitors to the site in the past twelve months alone. There have been very few months where there have been less than 50,000 visitors. March was the busiest month with more than 76,000 visitors.

Earlier in the year, the site crashed twice due to the high number of visitors to the site exceeding the bandwidth, necessitating the extension of bandwidth on the site twice. This may have co-incided with students going on teaching practice at the time! Hopefully, this problem has been sorted out and will not happen again. Thanks to those who informed me early of the problem and the site wasn’t down for all that long. Thanks also to my hosting company who got the site up and running very quickly once I made them aware of the problem.

The number of resources on the site also grew during the past twelve months. At last count there were almost 3,000 individual resources on the site all of which are free to download. Many thanks to those who donated resources to the site during the year to share with others. Thanks also to Luke Curley of Edware Interactive Learning who sponsored the first competition on Seomra Ranga back in November. He donated copies of his award-winning geography software as prizes to those who donated self-made resources to the site during that month. While not that many teachers took part in the competition, I did receive quite a number of new resources to the site. It’s been quite busy towards the end of term so you may have noticed that very few new resources have appeared on the site recently. This will be rectified during the summer.

During this year I also embarked on a project to try to unearth old filmstrips which may have been lying around schools gathering dust. It took a while to get going and I met many brick walls in officialdom trying to find out where I could retrieve some of the filmstrips. However, after a couple of posts on some teacher forums, great interest was shown in the project. Initially I was interested in receiving the old Buntús filmstrips used in the teaching of Gaeilge. At this stage I have received almost a full set of these for each class level, except for the odd one here and there. However, lots of other interesting filmstrips have also been unearthed, particularly SESE related ones – lots of geography, history and nature. At this stage I have received more than 350 filmstrips, boxes and envelopes of them stacked in the corner of my sitting room. The aim is to digitise them over the summer and to convert them into Powerpoint resources, to be made available on the site later in the year. What are missing from these resources are many of the teaching notes to accompany the filmstrip. The resources would be much better if these could be located and made available with the Powerpoint. If anyone thinks they might still have copies of these, could they please contact me.

It’s been a busy year also in my own school. Towards the end of the year I became involved in a pilot project to test the effect of iPod Touches in the primary school classroom. This project has been spearheaded by the Education Centres in Sligo, Kilkenny and Wexford in collaboration with Apple Ireland. This new technology has been a huge hit with the pupils in my 1st/2nd class and they really enjoyed using the iPods for the past 5-6 weeks. We will be continuing the pilot project into the next school year. I have been blogging about the project on this site and it has generated a lot of interest from other teachers. The pupils have also been blogging about the project and you can read about what they have said on our school web site HERE. My pupils also had the opportunity to get involved in a Twitter experiment with other schools this year, organised by Simon Lewis, and we used Twitter to tell about our iPods as well as making comments about our school, our local area and about the most expensive painting in the world, No. 5 by Jackson Pollock. They really enjoyed getting involved in Tweeting daily.

Lastly, Seomra Ranga is very soon going to get a badly needed facelift! The site is almost three years old and I myself have found that I was getting tired of the look of the site. I was also aware that because the number of resources on the site had grown so much in that space of time, that it may have become increasingly more difficult to find the exact resource that you were looking for. So, I have been working with a local company on the total re-design of the site and am really looking forward to the finished product going live on the internet. The new site will integrate much better the existing site and the blog, with the Twitter page having a similar feel. This may take some more time as there is still a lot of work to be done on it yet. The site will have a new look, a new logo and many new resources to launch it. I hope it gets a good reaction.

Christmas Celebration 009

Christmas greetings to you all from Seomra Ranga, and best wishes for the New Year. Enjoy the well-earned break and return to the site in 2010 for all your classroom resources. It’s been a busy year for Seomra Ranga, especially since September when the site experienced record numbers of visitors. This level of traffic to the site has exceeded all expectations with almost 450,000 visitors to the site during the last twelve months, the past four months being the busiest of all. It’s been so busy with traffic that the site has crashed twice as the allocated bandwidth was exceeded. The hosting plan has been upgraded to try to cope with the level of visitors so hopefully this will not happen again.

A special word of thanks to those who went to the trouble of uploading resources to the site to share with others. It’s easy to do – just attach the resource (in any format .doc, .ppt, .pdf, .jpeg, .pub, etc) to an e-mail and send it to info@seomraranga.com.

2010 will hopefully bring new and fresh changes to the site. Already the domain name www.seomraranga.ie has been secured so the site is now also accessible through that address. The site is also currently being re-designed and will hopefully be launched early in the new year. New content and resources are also being planned to add to the existing bank of resources on the site. Please let me know if there are changes that you feel would add to the design and functionality of the site.

Seomra Ranga / Edware Competition

Many thanks to all Seomra Ranga users who took the trouble to upload a resource to the website during the month of November for the Seomra Ranga / Edware Competition. Many new resources have been added to the site as a result of the competition. Some people added many new resources to the site. However, overall, I thought that many more individuals would have taken part in the competition, especially given that the site attracts so many visitors each month.

Many thanks to Luke Curley at Edware Interactive Learning (www.edware.ie) for sponsoring the prizes of the popular Know Your Ireland and Know Your Europe software. Each person who uploaded a resource was allocated a number by me. Luke then selected three random numbers in order to select the prize recipients. The winners of the prizes are Shaygirl, Orla Dempsey and Drom NS.

Seomra Ranga / Edware Competition

Seomra Ranga is delighted to team up with Edware Interactive Learning (http://www.edware.ie), an Irish company,  to bring you a competition on the website for the month of November. Edware is sponsoring prizes of their hugely successful geography software programmes Know Your Ireland (two copies) and Know Your Europe. Edware also produces the Know Your World and Know Your USA programmes. All these programmes are especially suitable to be used on an IWB for whole class teaching. They also feature lots of activities based on the content of each programme.

To be in with a chance of winning one of these three prizes, all you have to do is upload a resource to the Seomra Ranga website during the month of November. Simply attach the resource, in any format (.doc, .ppt, .pdf, .xls, .pub, .jpg etc) to an e-mail and send it to info@seomraranga.com You can enter the competition as many times as you wish – one e-mail = one competition entry. The only condition is that you must have created the resource yourself and not received it from someone else or downloaded it from another website.

So if you have documents, lesson plans or classroom resources that you have created, please consider sharing them with others through the Seomra Ranga website and be in with a chance to win an excellent piece of software. It is Seomra Ranga practice to credit the creator of a resource on the website. If you would prefer not to have your name with a resource on the site, please indicate this on your entry e-mail. So get uploading your resources during November.

Website Downtime

chained_computer

Working with IT can be frustrating sometimes! Just when everything is running along smoothly, a glitch hits the system when least expected. This is what happened to the Seomra Ranga website last week. And as Murphy’s Law would have it, the glitch happened when I was out of the country. It appears that the Seomra Ranga website just got too busy during the month of October with more than 51,000 visits. This also co-incided with teachers looking for resources in the run-up to Hallowe’en. Due to the level of downloading, the allocated bandwidth of the site was exceeded and access to the site was automatically blocked. This is the first time that this has happened to the site – looking positively it may be an indicator of the success of the site.

I only became aware of the access problems to the site after I decided to check in with Education Posts during the week to see what was happening in the education world in Ireland. A swift e-mail to my host provider, Lets Host, and they worked immediately on getting the site back up and running. For the longer term, the bandwidth issue will be resolved to eliminate the possibility of this happening again. So everything is back to normal and hopefully the gremlins will be happy with their Hallowe’en surprise for Seomra Ranga and stay away for a long time to come!

2nd Birthday

2nd20birthday

Seomra Ranga recently celebrated its 2nd birthday. Those two years have flown by. When starting out, I never expected that the site would be so successful. September is usually a busy month for the site for obvious reasons with teachers preparing for the new school year and looking for resources for their classrooms. There were 54,000 visits to the site this September, an incredible figure given that the site is only two years old and that the site is not advertised anywhere – people seem to have found out about Seomra Ranga by word of mouth alone. The plan for the next year is simple – to keep on producing free resources that are relevant to the primary school classroom especially in an Irish context. The most popular areas of the site are the Gaeilge section and the blog. Teachers constantly remark that they like the site especially for the Gaeilge resources as there are very few sites on the internet that provide Gaeilge resources. Gaeilge resources will continue to form a large part of the site for this very reason. So after two very busy years, it’s still enjoyable providing free resources to Irish teachers. Here’s to year 3!

Lots More Visitors

blog021

Lots more visitors have been visiting the site and downloading some of the free resources available on the site and in the last couple of days, the number of visitors to the site has exceeded the 300,000 mark. The site has been busy in the last couple of weeks with the return to school at the beginning of the month with an average of 2,000 visitors a day. Lots of new resources are being added all the time and you can keep up to date with new resources through the site blog (http://seomraranga.com/blog/), the Seomra Ranga Twitter site (http://twitter.com/seomraranga), on the “New Signs and Posters” section on the homepage or on the “What’s New?” section of the homepage.

Irish Independent Mentions Seomra Ranga

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

It was a great surprise to see the Irish Independent give a mention to the Seomra Ranga Blog in todays business section of the paper. The “Blog Digest” section of the paper gives a mention to blogs every Thursday and today they focussed on Irish blogs with an educational interest. Considering Seomra Ranga is not yet two years old, I was amazed to see it recommended in a National paper. The article also mentioned the blogs of Noel Cunningham, John Hegarty and the Askea Boys NS blog. Read the article from today’s Irish Independent HERE

3M Roadwise Interactive Website

3mroadwise

I just discovered this website today and quickly could see how this would be of huge benefit to the primary school classroom. The website is sponsored by the multinational 3M which makes, among other things, reflective clothing for the emergency services, construction workers, cyclists and pedestrians. The company claims that the website is part of their contribution to corporate responsibility. The website has been created specifically for the primary school curriculum and highlights the importance of safety on the roads for all road users – pedestrians, cyclists and all types of motorist. The site claims that it has been written by primary school teachers with the approval of the Road Safety Authority. It is designed to support SPHE and science lessons for 7-11 year olds and also to aid cross-curricular work in geography, maths and english.

The website has three sections – one for pupils, one for teachers and one for parents. The pupils’ section has four main areas: Are You Roadwise?, Science, Cycling and Roadwise Game. Within each area are many lessons and much information for pupils to learn with regard to road safety. The information is presented in a colourful, animated fashion with lots of activities with which to engage pupils. Pupils learn about the Safe Cross Code, safety on a bicycle, safety in the car, safety in the countryside and also learn to recognise common road signs. The website then cleverly integrates the road safety theme with science and links it to the strand units of light, sound and forces. Pupils learn about light sources, reflective materials and the importance of light in road safety. In the sound section pupils learn how sound are made and how sound transmits information. This is then linked to traffic sounds. In the forces section, pupils learn about the push and pull of forces, friction and this is then linked to road surfaces. When pupils have learned all about road safety, they can then play an interactive Roadwise Game – there is one game for 7-9 year olds and another for 9-11 year olds.

The teacher section of the website has a guide to using the site, lesson plans and activity sheets in connection with the road safety theme. The resources are free to download and are in .pdf format – the teacher just has to fill in a short registration form before being able to download documents. These documents are really comprehensive and outline a body of integrated work which realistically could last a number of weeks in the classroom. The parents’ section of the website gives hints and tips on how parents can encourage their children to behave in a safe manner on the roads, on a bicycle and in the car. It also explains what the children learn in school as part of this unit of work.

I read on another internet forum that 3M said that it didn’t want, as part of its corporate responsibility strategy, to simply donate a sum of money to a particular charity. It said that they wanted to do something proactive, where their contribution could make a real difference. I believe that they have gone a long way towards achieving that goal. This website is a very positive contribution to the primary school curriculum. Many other companies produce competitions for pupils to enter where corporate awareness is an intrinsic aspect, or many tokens have to be collected over many months to get a “free” classroom resource. Although the 3M logo is clearly to be seen in the header of every page on this website, it’s quite unobtrusive and appears to be almost secondary to the curriculum content of the site.

For the classroom lucky enough to be equipped with an Interactive White Board, this is an excellent resource for capturing the attention of the pupils. The website will certainly engage pupils and they will really enjoy the interactive content of the lessons, learning life skills in a fun and imaginative way. The 3M company should certainly be congratulated for producing a genuinely free resource for the primary school classroom. The website can be visited at:

1500 Resources On Seomra Ranga

Monday, June 1st, 2009

download

Seomra Ranga has reached another milestone with the recent addition of the 1,500th downloadable resource to the website. The resources cover all areas of the curriculum and are free to download. Most of the resources have been created by Seomra Ranga but some have been generously donated to the site by other teachers. You too can add to the resource bank by simply sending a resource that you have created as an attachment on an e-mail to info@seomraranga.com . I’ll upload the resource to the site so that it can be shared by everyone. Here’s to the next 1,500 resources!
