Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI), in association with Scoilnet Maps, have announced a competition for primary schools called “Map My School”. Aimed at senior classes in primary schools (4th-6th classes), the Map My School competition sets out to bring map making and map reading skills to primary school children.
Pupils will be required to draw a map of their school and its perimeter at a scale considered appropriate, decorating it with their creativity how they wish. The map should also show the scale used, a compass indicating orientation (north, south, east and west) and a calculation of the area covered by the school building and grounds.
The Map My School website has lots of information about the competition including notes for teachers explaining how the competition links with curriculum objectives, competition rules, tips on how to make a map and how to enter the competition.
Prizes for the competition include a trip to OSI and Dublin Zoo, an iPad and an iPad Mini.
