The Mathletes Challenge 2015 launches on Monday January 5th. After the success of the inaugural event last year, Mathletes is hoping to get more schools involved in the challenge this year. The four-month challenge aims to develop pupils’ confidence and competence in maths using Khan Academy, a free online learning platform.
Pupils from 4th to 6th class are eligible to participate individually in the Student Challenge and/or with their school in the School Challenge. The top scorers will advance to county, provincial and national finals in May where over €20,000 in prizes and the title of MATHletes Challenge All-Ireland Champion are on offer.
The statistics from the Mathletes Challenge last year show:
- 328 teachers from 276 schools in 26 counties competed in the MATHletes Schools Challenge 2014
- 2/3 of these were primary schools (184 schools) and 1/3 were secondary (94 schools)
- 93% of MATHletes competed with their school
- 85% of teachers who signed up for MATHletes were new to using Khan Academy
