I really enjoyed reading this book and I would highly recommend it. There’s a lot of spying, action and adventure. I felt like I was in the story along with the three main characters who are friends that find themselves caught up in the action at a very volatile period of Irish history.
Alice, Johnny and Stella have different viewpoints on the War of Independence and this make things very interesting. This also helped me to see that there was a variety of opinions among the people of Ireland at that time too.
There is a tension in the air throughout the story which echoes the turmoil of those years. This is set very well with the ordinary things that the children do, such as play in the band or enjoy a game of chess.
The book builds to a dramatic conclusion and it was very exciting too. It was an excellent book to read with great characters and lots of history and action too.
