“Leo’s War”, written by Patricia Murphy, is a wartime adventure story which takes place in Rome during World War II at a time when the Germans occupied Italy. Leo and his sister Ruby live with their mother just outside Rome and their father is away fighting against the Germans. The main character is Leo, a young boy, half Jewish. His mother is an Irish American.
One day, Auntie Della calls over, but after she’s left the Germans arrive and arrest Leo’s mother. Alone, Leo and Ruby have to make their way to Rome and the Vatican.
That is where they meet the famous Monsignor Hugh O’ Flatherty, a priest in the Vatican who helps people escape the Nazis. He helps them hide and they go about planning their mother’s escape.
My favourite character is Ruby. She is very patient, brave and believes in magic.
I liked this book because it was exciting and imaginative.
I would rate it 8/10.
