“Lily Takes A Chance” by Judi Curtin is the fourth book in the “Lily at Lissadell” series. This book is told from the point of view of the protagonist, Lily Brennan. Lily Takes A Chance is about a young girl working in Lissadell to provide money for her family. Recently, Lily’s friend Harry returned to Lissadell after serving for the Belgians in the war.
Lily makes a new friend called Sam who is determined to go to war. Lily is very worried because she remembers the letters that Harry sent her from Belgium. Harry was cold and afraid when he was at war. Maeve de Markievicz,
Lily’s friend has been told that she has to be sent to a boarding school in England. Maeve does not like the sound of this so she brings Lily along on her adventure to Dublin to persuade her mother not to make her go to a boarding school. Will Lily sort her problems out?
I really enjoy Judi Curtin’s books. This is the fourth book in the series and I have read every one.
My favourite character is Cook. She is not a major character in this book but she does a lot to help Lily’s family, the Brennans. On Saturdays (Lily’s day off) Cook fills a big basket full of goods for Lily to bring home to her mam.
In my opinion, the most memorable part of this book is when Lily becomes a teacher. I think this is so lovely since Lily has wanted to be a teacher since she was a little girl.
I would definitely recommend this book to my friends as I really enjoyed it. I would recommend this book for ages 9+. I would rate this book 10/10.
